Frequent Traveller News We are currently in Chiang Mai and enjoying all that this dynamic city has to offer. As many of you know, we spend a lot of time here, and we aren't the only ones. Chiang Mai has a charm that draws people back. The city plays host to a mix of short-term tourists, long stay visitors and a large expat community. For the tourist, it is the gateway to hilltribe villages, elephant sanctuaries, breathtaking mountain scenery and much more. This trip, though, we decided to skip the tourist attractions in favour of catching up with friends and simply enjoying our time in one of our favourite places. Chiang Mai is a revolving door for long stay visitors. Along with our expat buddies, we have many friends who spend a chunk of the year here and we frequently find ourselves bumping into each other. This visit was no different. We slipped back into easy friendships and had fun sharing activities, dining out and enjoying a quality of life made easier by the low cost of living. You won't have time to be bored either. Ladies' lunches, arts & crafts, sporting clubs, meetups and workshops are just some of what is on offer. Across our travels in Asia, we have met more and more people opting for long stay travel. It lets you immerse yourself in a different culture and stretches your travel dollar much further than a quick holiday ever could. For Australians in particular, it has become far easier in recent years. The Destination Thailand Visa, introduced in 2024, offers a five-year, multiple-entry option with stays of up to 180 days at a time, which has opened the door for a lot more people to give long stay living a proper go.
