The one country where we'd actually book a tour

Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, South Korea, all done on our own steam, and we'd happily do them all again the same way. China is different. In November we travelled to Chongqing with Wendy Wu Tours, covering the same ground as the Chongqing leg of their New Horizons of China itinerary, and it made the case for guided travel better than any brochure could. Outside the big hotels there's limited English, attractions need advance ticketing through Chinese apps, and the transport takes local knowledge to use confidently. Watching all of that get handled behind the scenes while we watched 5,000 drones light up the skyline and ate proper Sichuan hot pot was a bit of a revelation.
